CAN VEGAN TRAVEL CHANGE THE WORLD?

Travel has the unique potential to transcend language and culture, it educates and informs, it challenges the status quo and raises awareness of societal issues.

Vegan travel helps to promote the availability of a lifestyle in which animals, people and the environment are not exploited.

It creates the demand, supports existing vegan businesses and enables conscious economies to grow.

And after you travel you’ll have a story to tell.

Why is a story so important?

Stories are the building blocks for cultural identity, generations of people all over the world have sculpted their societies with storytelling and when you return home from your travels you’ll share your story with friends, family and colleagues giving them the precious gift of information in the form of a traveler's tale.

How can you make a difference in 2015?

1. Support Support something meaningful

Purpose driven companies are going to shape the world we live in, give whatever is available to you, your time, your money or your support.

Through my travels I met a lovely Scottish girl Kay, who travelled with me initially in Spain and Later, Guatemala. One day Kay came out with a lovely bag which had a very distinct, beautiful pattern on it.

I found out that she had bought it from a vegan start up company in the UK Oakabee. Now I know about their products and love the idea my money can fund, support and help other vegan businesses to grow.

The more we travel, the more we see and do, and because everyone loves a story, we pass on our experiences knowledge and information.

2. Connect with people who inspire you

Nothing is more motivating than progress, actively seek out others who inspire and innovate, look out for normal people doing nice things.

It’s been said (by an ancient Chilean man I met on sitting on a rock in Easter Island nearly ten years ago) that raising awareness of societal issues is the first step to our worlds recovery.

On a recent trip to Lake Atitlan here in Guatemala I met up with a lovely and very inspiring lady, Selaine who set up AYUDA, a not for profit organisation focusing on the care and wellbeing of homeless and impoverished dogs in the area.

Working within small Mayan communities has not come without various challenges for Selaine and her team but they have persevered in their efforts and last year successfully sterilized 625 dogs, created an intern program with vets from Guatemala city and provided humane education to locals.

That is inspiring.

3. Set goals

You develop what you focus on.

Where is vegan holiday heaven for you? What does it look like? What are your interests? What do you want to experience? How do you want to feel?

Two years ago I set the goal of serving vegan traveler's in order to promote the availability of a lifestyle in which animals, people and environment are not exploited (I know, I keep saying that and it's because that one sentiment is my motivation). This one goal has taken me on a fascinating journey through countries and continents and I'm still only at the very beginning.

4. Share your knowledge

Each time I run a trip in Guatemala I get into the hotel kitchen and teach the staff how to make one new vegan breakfast dish, scrambled tofu in Guatemala was the most recent and they loved it!

Travel will often push you outside of your comfort zone, you'll be motivated to accept new cuisine and alternative forms of entertainment whilst sharing your own knowledge in the process.

5. Focus

Empower yourself and other traveler's by taking a moment to think how different the world would be if the media focused on the similarities between people, countries and cultures as opposed to the differences.

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness"
Mark Twain
