TOP VEGAN TRAVEL MYTHS DEBUNKED

Is there somewhere you really want to go? Somewhere you've lusted after visiting for a while?

You've got the guidebooks, thought about what you would pack but still haven't quite committed to it and you're not quite sure why.

Vegan travel myths; specially designed to create fear, stop you having beautiful experiences and living life to the full.

Let's get de-bunking.

I WON'T BE ABLE TO EAT ANYTHING

You will.

So, here's the thing; although vegan restaurants are great and we all want to do our bit to support them, they are not actually necessary for our survival.

I've travelled through some of the most remote places in the world (Atacama desert + some other desert I stumbled across in northern Africa + various jungles in south and Central America) and in the smallest, most remote of villages, I've have always found the following:

A shop / small market

A football pitch

A church / place of worship

Someone dealing alcohol + gas (usually the same person)

Sometimes you may have to get creative, an avocado and orange sandwich  is quite a humbling experience in the middle of the jungle.

Graze; if you're on the move and see something nice, go for it, don't wait for and evening meal, grazing slowly throughout out the day is definitely the best way to eat as a vegan traveler in an unfamiliar environment.

I WON'T BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

You will.

If you were walking through your local town and someone, obviously a tourist with limited or no language skills approached you what would you do?

Would you try and assist them? Of course you would, us homo sapiens, we love to share knowledge and no matter where you go in the world, people are fundamentally the same, we have similar fears, desires, dreams and aspirations.

Similar to vegan travel myths, there are elements of the media specially designed to create fear, stop you having beautiful experiences and living life to the full.

Just take a moment to think about how different your thoughts and feelings would be about a place, country or culture if the media placed focused on the similarities as opposed to the differences.

AS A VEGAN TRAVELER I'M FEARFUL OF...........

Being in a situation that conflicts with my morals, finding sneaky bits of ham in my breakfast, having to explain myself repeatedly, being locked out of my hotel room naked with only my i-pad for cover and someone offering me a jumper made from wool to protect my modesty (you never know).

Fear is just excitement without the breath.

If you do happen to find yourself in a sticky situation the very best thing you can do is to assess the situation and try to separate your emotional reaction from it, prioritise and then act, all in that order.

Psst just one last thing I would like to share with you this afternoon

Emma's friend Dave: "Em, why are you so dedicated to promoting travel, to be honest I don't really see how you can create change that way"

Cricket noises {me giving it some thought}
And so it occurred to me:

To respect the environment, we need to be in it.

To respect people we need to meet them.

To support animal welfare we need to be promoting the availability of a lifestyle in which animals, people and the environment are not exploited.

And that is exactly why we need to travel.

If you agree me then tweet it out here >>>>
